Domenico Cimarosa
(Aversa 1749 — Venice 1801)
La Baronessa Stramba
One-act farce — [Revision of the farce “I Matrimoni In Ballo”]
“La Baronessa Stramba” by Domenico Cimarosa, with libretto by Pasquale Mililotti, is a musical farce that originally constituted the second act of the opera “I sdegni per amore”, which “due to various circumstances and lack of time, had to be condensed into a single act.”
It premiered at the Teatro Nuovo in Naples in January 1776 under the title “I matrimoni in ballo” and was later staged under the title “La Baronessa Stramba” ten years later in the same theater, alongside the two-act musical comedy “Il Credulo”, as the fourth opera of the 1786 Carnival (also performed in St. Petersburg from 1794 until the end of the following year), with the addition of six newly composed pieces.
The audience’s taste, which had evolved over time, demanded that after the main opera, a short comic farce with the same theme and characters — sometimes disguised — would be performed to conclude the evening cheerfully and deliver its moral.
